Hester Prynne commits adultery with a colonial towns preacher, Dimmesdale. She is convicted and sentenced to wear a violent A on her chest for the rest of her days. She alike has to live upon the towns pillory the first day out of shut away so every whiz ordain know who she is. Hester had a child by this adultery escapade, and her find out is Pearl. Pearl helps her through being an adulteress, still Hester frequently thinks of her as someone elses child. Meanwhile, Dimmesdale is tortered mentally because Hester will not differentiate who she commited adultery with and Dimmesdale will not put in out and verbalise it himself. Hesters husband came to her while she was in lock in and spoke with her. He made her promise that she would not assert that she was his wife, and he changed his name to Rob ert Chillingworth. During the story, Chillingworth tries to find out who she commited adultery with so he potbelly take revenge. Eventually, Dimmesdale becomes so sick, Chillingworth, the towns doctor, takes him in and takes safekeeping of him. He suspects that the town reverend is the one guilty of this crime, but is careful dynamical what he does about it.

Over clip, Hester becomes much callous to the insults and takes a more active role in the community. Towards the end of the story, Chillingworth gives her permission to say who he was.
